'GOING FOR AN ENGLISH', GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME, BBC TWO (1998)
Voted one of Britain's 50 Greatest Comedy Sketches, Goodness Gracious Me's 'Going for an English' expertly held up a mirror to the behaviours explored in this exhibition. Arriving drunk, poor table manners, inappropriately touching and verbally abusing the waiter are just some of the examples satirised in this 1998 sketch. This clip is now over 20 years old, however, many people today still identify with this familiar Friday night scene. By flipping the stereotype of the Indian restaurant on its head, 'Going for an English' shrewdly invites us all to think more closely about the way we interact with different people and their cultures.
