'HOUSING PLIGHT' THE TIMES, (1965)

In the decades following the Second World War, an increase in non-white immigration to Britain was coupled with a rise in complaints to local and national newspapers by white British residents about the practices and traditions of their new neighbours. Many of the initial interactions between white British residents and non-white migrants occurred through cooking and its associated smells. The above text, taken from a 1965 article in The Times, shows a white woman contemplating moving house due to the smells she believes she will encounter upon the arrival of her new Indian neighbours. These negative stereotypes set an unwelcoming tone for interactions between white Britons and new migrant groups.
